What are chloramines and what should I do to my water before adding to my aquarium?
Most drinking water from the tap now contains chloramines. Chloramine is a chemical compound composed of chlorine and ammonia. These disinfectants are used in drinking water to prevent the spread of germs and disease. Although people and animals can safely drink chloraminated water, water for special uses such as kidney dialysis, pond water for fish and amphibian pets, and water used by some business and industrial customers must have chloramines removed or neutralized. As with chlorine, chloramine is harmful to fish (saltwater and freshwater), reptiles, shellfish, and amphibians that live in water.
The appropriate dechloraminating products or carbon filtration equipment for removing chlorine and ammonia will be available in most pet and aquarium stores prior to the conversion. Home remedies such as boiling water, using salts, and having water remain still are not effective methods to remove chloramines. Unlike chlorine, which only takes a few days to dissipate when remaining still, chloramine stays in the water for a few weeks. The best way for fish owners to remove chloramine is to use a conditioner that contains a dechloraminating chemical. See your local pet store for dechloraminating chemicals.
